How should men wear a blazer?

Un blazer se porte seul, avec un pantalon d'une autre couleur : c'est toute la différence avec une veste de costume.

A well cut blazer does the work of three garments: it dresses up jeans, it structures chinos, and it stands in for a suit jacket on the days that do not call for the full uniform. It is the first thing I recommend to a man who wants to raise his style without buying ten pieces. The catch is picking the right one, and knowing what goes underneath. Chosen badly, a blazer looks like the top half of someone else's suit.

What matters before you buy:

  • One colour to start with: navy, which covers about 80 % of situations.
  • Fit is judged at the shoulder. Everything else is a 30 to 60 euro tailoring job.
  • Cool wool all year, flannel in winter, linen in July.
  • It works over dark jeans and chinos as well as over wool trousers.
  • Useful budget: 150 to 300 euros new, alterations included.

Blazer, suit jacket, bomber: where is the line?

Getting this wrong is expensive, so let us settle it. A suit jacket is born with matching trousers, in the same cloth and the same dye lot. Separated from them it almost always looks orphaned, because the cloth is too smooth and the shoulder too sharp to live alone. A blazer is designed to be worn on its own, with trousers of a different colour. It takes textured cloth, contrast buttons, a half lining. A bomber is sportswear with an elasticated hem, another category entirely, the same family as the leather jacket for men, which plays a similar weekend role.

Simple test: if you hesitate to wear it without its trousers, it is a suit jacket. When the occasion needs both pieces, go for a proper men's suit.

Which cut and which cloth for a first men's blazer?

Knowing how to choose a men's blazer comes down to three checks, in this order. The shoulder first: the seam must land exactly on the bone, neither short nor overhanging. Then the sleeves, ending at the wrist bone and showing one to two centimetres of shirt cuff. Length last: the hem covers the seat, no further. A slightly shaped regular suits nearly every build. A slim needs a narrow chest, otherwise the top button pulls into an X. A double breasted looks superb but has to stay buttoned all evening, which is comfortable neither at the table nor in a car. On a shorter man, a slightly cropped length and narrow lapels lengthen the line, as long as the hem still covers the seat.

On cloth, wool remains the benchmark: it barely creases, it recovers as it dries, it holds its shape for years. Cotton and linen are more casual and crease far more.

Avoid 100 % polyester, recognisable by its cold hand and slightly glassy sheen. It does not breathe, and it shines at the elbows after two seasons.

Which colour should you buy first?

Navy, no debate. It works with raw denim, beige chinos, grey flannel trousers, a white shirt or a plain t-shirt. Mid grey comes second, quieter and slightly more formal. Beige and camel are excellent from spring to autumn but narrow the field of combinations. Patterns come later: houndstooth, muted checks and fine stripes extend a wardrobe that already works, never the reverse. Forest green and burgundy are third blazer colours, not first. Resist the black blazer: it is harder to match than it looks, it reads as waiting staff, and it fades badly. If matching is what blocks you, the full logic is in our guide to matching colours in an outfit.

Four outfits that actually work

Office, no tie

Navy blazer, white or pale blue shirt, grey wool trousers, brown derbies. The most profitable outfit in a man's wardrobe: it needs no thought in the morning and passes in nine workplaces out of ten.

Weekend in town

Textured blazer, a plain t-shirt with some body to it, dark men's jeans with no fading. The charm sits in the clash of registers: dressed on top, undressed below. Loafers or smooth leather sneakers on the feet, never running shoes.

Dinner and evenings

Navy or charcoal blazer, plain shirt without a tie, dark trousers, leather shoes. Once the temperature drops, a fine knit or a slim merino vest for men can replace the shirt or sit over it.

Daytime wedding

Beige or light blue blazer, white shirt, men's chinos or linen trousers, loafers. More breathable than a dark suit in July sun, and entirely appropriate whenever the invitation sets no strict dress code.

Five mistakes that give a badly worn blazer away

The bottom button done up, first of all. On a two button blazer you close the top one and leave the second open, always; sitting down, you open both. Next, the brand label stitched on the sleeve, to be unpicked along with the basting thread holding the vents shut. Third, trousers so long they break in a concertina over the shoe and cancel out everything above. Fourth, a shirt collar gaping at the neck, which ruins an outfit faster than an average blazer ever will. Fifth, stacked patterns: one patterned item per outfit, the rest plain. Menswear is unforgiving here, and the smart look comes precisely from that restraint.

What to spend, and how to look after it

The right price for a first wool blazer sits between 150 and 300 euros. Below 100 the cloth is nearly always synthetic and the inner canvas fused, which gives that cardboard feel nothing can fix. Above 500 you pay for a floating canvas and Italian cloth, sometimes French making, a real gain in drape but one to leave until you know your cut. Add 30 to 60 euros of alterations: shortening sleeves and taking in the waist turn a decent jacket into one that looks made for you. Best euro of the whole purchase.

A blazer does not go to the dry cleaner every month. A brush after each wear, a wide hanger, the occasional steam: twice a year is plenty, more damages the wool. To finish the silhouette, smooth leather white sneakers for men remain the most versatile shoe under a men's blazer in a casual register.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear a blazer with jeans?

Yes, and it is the most useful pairing of all. Use dark, evenly coloured jeans with no rips or heavy fading, and a slightly textured blazer rather than a smooth suit jacket. The contrast should look deliberate.

What is the difference between a blazer and a suit jacket?

A suit jacket comes with trousers in the same cloth and is worn with them; a blazer is made to live alone, over trousers of another colour. Blazers accept textured cloth, contrast buttons and a half lining.

What size blazer should you choose?

The one that fits at the shoulder, since everything else can be altered. The shoulder seam should end on the bone, you should be able to cross your arms without the back pulling, and a flat hand should slide between chest and buttoned jacket.
